Top Mistakes First-Time Equipment Auction Buyers Make

For first-time buyers, avoiding these pitfalls is the key to a successful, stress-free purchase. Here are the top mistakes to watch out for, and how you can steer clear of them.

1. Do Your Homework: Research the make, model, and typical retail value of any item you’re interested in. Set a maximum bid and stick to it.

2. Inspect, Inspect, Inspect: Attend preview days in person or scrutinize every photo and description online. Look for rust, wear on hinges and seals, and ask about service history if possible.

3. Factor in Additional Costs: Remember to budget for potential repairs, professional installation, and transportation. A $1,000 auction score isn’t a deal if it costs $2,000 to move and fix.

5. Start Small: If you’re new to auctions, begin by bidding on a single, less critical piece to understand the process before committing to a major purchase.

6. Forgetting About Electrical, Gas, and Plumbing Compatibility: Know your specs. Before bidding on any powered equipment, confirm your kitchen’s voltage, phase, amperage, gas type (natural vs. propane), and plumbing connections. This information is usually in the item’s description or spec sheet.
